Frequently Asked Questions

- Why pay for anonymity when there are so many free proxies out in the wild?
- You never really know who is running these proxies. Your connection to a HTTP or SOCKS proxy is not encrypted. TOR, and open proxies in general are usually very slow, and could block random sites, inject ads while you browse the web, and so on. TorVPN is a secure and fast way to reach the internet offering a wide variety of features.

- I connected to TorVPN with OpenVPN but I still see my real IP.
- You have to run OpenVPN with administrator privileges, otherwise it cannot change routing settings.

- What is legally accepted?
- TorVPN operates in accordance with the Hungarian law. Freedom of speech is not only tolerated but very much supported. We do not give out information about our customers without a court warrant. Please see terms for more information.

- What activities are specifically disallowed?
- Spam (e-mail, web, SMS, VOIP, etc)
- Hacking attacks
- Denial of Service (DoS, DDoS)
- Portscanning, network scanning
- Abuse of personal information
- Child pornography

- Do you monitor my traffic?
- We do NOT monitor the contents of your communication. We do collect statistics to know the amount of data transferred and we do have protection against flooding and other abuse, but we are in no way interfering with your privacy.

- How do you measure my traffic?
- Instead of adding incoming+outgoing bytes together, we use whichever is higher. This means that if you send the same amount of data you receive, 1 GB of traffic quota actually means 2 GB!

- How many people have access to TorVPN?
- Two people have administrative access to TorVPN only. The HDD and any logs are encrypted. The network link going down halts all traffic.

- Why block SMTP for most packages?
- Spammers often sign up for VPN accounts that allow SMTP connections. We are open to giving you access to specific mail servers of your choice.

- What forms of payment are accepted?
- We accept Credits Cards, Paypal, Alertpay and CashU payments. If you would like to pay with a different method, let us know. We are open to implementing alternative payments.

- My account was deactivated even though I was using it
- Free users have to enter a captcha code on the website every once in a while to keep their accounts active. Your account may also get deactivated if there is no traffic for 24 hours after the registration (some people just register and then not use it, preventing other users from signing up who actually need it).
