TorVPN

TorVPN is a very affordable VPN solution that you can use with OpenVPN which is open source. The free signup gives you a gigabyte of traffic quota. Speeds are unlimited, the server has a gigabit connection.

UltraVPN

UltraVPN is a French free VPN provider. The software used is called UltraVPN and it is based on OpenVPN. Unfortunately, there is no option (that we found) for downloading the ca.crt and other configuration files separately for use with OpenVPN - they are only installed together with the UltraVPN bundle. After connecting, we have achieved speeds of up to 80 Kbytes/sec which is not a lot but at least it's stable. SMTP and HTTP connections are allowed (tcp ports 25 and 80), but unfortunately it seems that nothing else is. You can't use SSH, connect to special ports, or even use HTTPS! That's right, this makes sites like eBay, Paypal, and a lot of other HTTPS-only sites unavailable.

TheFreeVPN

The FreeVPN software caused some errors after installation, on the first run.

FreeVPN problem 1

The control panel appeared after clicking OK on the error message.

FreeVPN problem 2

The list of servers almost all were offline (even the paid ones). The VPN connection could not be tested.
After removing the installation, we found that the default homepage for the browser was set to TheFreeVpn site, which redirected us to a Russian 'mp3' site once.
